A practical guide to shooting great street photography
Publication design for a guide to shooting great street photography
We were approached by Andrew Turners to create an e-book design for a practical and philosophical guide to shooting great street photography. The Shooting Street e-book is a practical and philosophical guide to shooting great street photography.
After three decades of shooting street photography, Oxford based photographer and author Andrew Turner has launched his first E-book. The book is aimed at anyone interested in taking up and shooting great street photography. Along with tips and tricks on great technique, the book exhibits over 20 of Andrew’s best photos.
The brief was to create an e-book design that would incorporate a selection of Andrew’s best photographs from the last three decades along with an easy to read practical guide to shooting street photography.
Designing an e-book for street photographers
Split into eight easy-to-read chapters, the book has been written in a way to keep the readers attention. The e-book is aimed at anyone interested in taking up street photography. Opening up with a short introduction to ‘what is street photography’.
Andrew makes his recommendations on which cameras, lenses and accessories to use for the best results. Passing on his tips and tricks for taking great photos. Suggesting ideas for a single day project right up to a full 12 month project.
“Amazing job. Will be using James again for sure. Many thanks James.”
ANDREW TURNER – SHOOTING STREET
We kicked the design process off by looking at how we could incorporate large amounts of copy into the layout. Particularly aiming for a very visual look, opposed to having text heavy pages like a regular book.
Creating a layout that emphasises the imagery
Making sure we made the most of the beautiful photography to break the copy up into smaller sized sections. Choosing to place each image on a double-page spread, incorporating either sections of run-on-text or a pull quote. To give the e-book design a contemporary look, we chose an easy reading sans-serif font.
Using the font for both the headings and the body copy. We chose to place the body copy into a single column template, specifically setup for reading on a digital device. Therefore perfect for reading the e-book on-the-go or in the comfort of your own home.
